You give your leaders orders for each turns and in general they will do what you said to do in these orders. However, there are things that may cause your leaders not to perform as expected:
In conditions you didn't count on and didn't write contingencies for I will interpret (based on the rest of your orders) how to proceed. If you don't want me doing this I suggest long sets of orders with multiple contingencies.
If you give your leaders orders they determine to be suicidal I'll be making two rolls that they have to pass: loyalty and (for lack of a better term) bravery. A leader may be fanatically loyal to your King and nation, but if he's a coward he's most likely still going to turn and run if faced with what he considers likely or certain death.
